God’s plan is explained…

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life’     John 3:16

 

John 3:16 is arguably the best-known verse in the Bible. All you have to do is flash the reference “John 3:16” – just seven numbers and letters – and most people know immediately what verse you are talking about. It doesn’t matter if they are believers or unbelievers, faithful members of a congregation or dedicated avoiders of the Church. They get it!

All scripture is God-breathed…

and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training
in righteousness, so that God’s servant may be thoroughly equipped for every good work                  

2 Timothy 3:16

 

So we begin with John the Baptist…

John answered them all, ‘I baptise you with water.  But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.  He will baptise you with the Holy Spirit and with fire’                  

Luke 3:16

Then Jesus enters the scene…

As soon as Jesus was baptised he went up out of the water.  At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him.  (vs 17 And a voice from heaven said, this is my son, whom I love, with him I am well pleased)

What then is this love?

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for one another

1 John 3:16

And he changed lives…

By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has given this complete healing to him, as you can all see. (Healing the crippled beggar)

Acts 3:16

But humans are, well, human…

For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find evil and every evil practice.

James 3:16

To the Church in Laodicea

So because you are lukewarm – neither hot nor cold – I am about to spit you out of my mouth.

Revelation 3:16

What must we do to be ‘hot’ for Jesus?

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.

Col 3:16

Never forget how special you are!!

Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?

And just how holy that is…

But whenever anyone returns to the Lord, the veil is taken away

2 Cor 3:16

And that we are caught in a mystery…

Beyond all question, the mystery of godliness is great:

He appeared in a body,
Was vindicated by the Spirit
Was seen by angels
Was preached among the nations
Was believed on in the world
Was taken up in glory

1 Timothy 3:16

And so a prayer from Paul…

I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being
